It’s “our go-to place when we want to give foreign visitors a taste of traditional fish ’n’ chips” – with the bonus that you can “watch the boats arriving” with tomorrow’s fish. The owners also run the Fish Shack close by.

“Great seafood platters” and “wonderful smoked fish from the smokehouse next door” are the standout menu items at this “cosy place 10 metres from the sea” – a proper pub with “good ales too”, that has welcomed guests since early Victorian times. The beer garden at the front has views along the Northumberland coast that take in Dunstanburgh Castle.

2022 Review: FKA ‘Sea Salt’, this relative newbie on the growing local scene, in a “welcoming environment near Amble harbour”, is run by couple Julie Lunn-Bird (FOH) and Jonny Bird (who trained under Albert Roux). The “interesting” bistro-style menu often features fresh fish alongside the regular menu of burgers, steaks, salads etc.

This ambitious debut offers a 14-course set menu of ‘food we love to eat ourselves’ from Co Durham-born chef Gary McDermott and his partner, Claudia Mazareanu. The emphasis is on simplicity, the finest Northumberland produce, and a ‘refined take on familiar flavours’.
