Breaking news

The business closes. No successor know of as yet.

"After six wonderful years running The Wife of Bath, we have made the difficult decision to cease trading at the restaurant and rooms from the 28th of August. Selling the business in Wye allows the Rocksalt Group to focus its attention on its core collection of restaurants, pubs and bars in Folkestone and its Pickled Egg Pub Company chain.
We have loved sharing the best local produce with so many loyal customers at The Wife of Bath over the years and thank you wholeheartedly for your support. We are now pleased to pass the opportunity on to a new operator to continue the restaurant's fine Kent heritage.
If you have a reservation at The Wife of Bath, we will be in touch soon to provide an alternative option across our other site. Please do not hesitate to contact us via reservations@therocksaltgroup.com
We look forward to welcoming you at our other venues soon. Find out where you can eat, drink and stay with the Rocksalt Group"

Up-and-down reports on this “characterful” hotel restaurant in the attractive village of Wye, where “the previous Spanish tapas theme has disappeared” to be replaced by a more conventional modern European offering. Decent reports were peppered with gripes – “slightly overpriced…”, “good points but all-in-all disappointing…”. In November 2021, celeb chef Mark Sargeant announced his departure from the business – perhaps it will now find a calmer level?

“The attractive village of Wye is not where you’d expect Spanish food”, but that’s precisely what’s on the cards at Rock Salt chef Mark Sargeant’s “light and airy” hotel-restaurant – in action since 1962, but turning out something “different” (tapas but also a “wonderful breakfast”) since he acquired it in 2016.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
