Harden's says

Exciting news from The Small Holding’s Will Devlin, who has opened a third site set in a "sustainable woodland community" in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty in the East Sussex countryside.

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"As no stranger to the joys of Devlin food, it was important we attended the new venue to try it out. Having been to Small Holding and Curlew on multiple occasions it was only right to try out the new experience. Slight challenge to find the site it’s on as it is all pretty new and currently unsigned. The venue matches all the other on site buildings. It’s very modern with a clear sustainable slant. Spacious and very clean cut. The menu is small but enough choices. Between the four of us we tried most things. Started with a few side dishes, charcuterie anchovies and bread, all delicious. Starters, we had were cured trout and pumpkin soup. I had the trout, sensational dressing on beautiful fish. I was astonished just how nice the pumpkin soup was. Mains we had were Hake and Pork chops. My hake was superb and I was told the pork chops were equally good. Loved the vegetables with them. Dessert was a wonderful chocolate mousse with blackberry and hazelnut. Others had the raspberries with meringue and meadowsweet. Staff are attentive and very efficient in their service. Toilets are very clean. Was it worth the 2 hour round trip? Categorically yes. This is not a high end pretentious venue, it’s the younger sister of two superb restaurants each serving their unique styles of wonderful but individual menus. Don’t be fooled into thinking that by visiting one you get the whole “Devlin” experience, it’s worth trying all three. Well done all!"
