Harden's survey result
Summary
“The Pig hotels are pricey, but there is a reason that their restaurants are successful” – firstly a “fabulous location” (here a shabby-chic building overlooking Studland Bay), then “great gastro-pub style food” which “delivers on taste”, and makes the most of produce from their kitchen gardens. Reports on this outpost were considerably more upbeat this year, with praise for both the “pizzas cooked outside (in the summer) looking out toward the beach” (the MO of their ‘Garden Oven’ eatery), or the “superb” Sunday lunch to be had in the conservatory restaurant. Top Tip – “eat from the ‘25-Mile Menu’ for a bargain experience”.
Summary
This shabby-chic seaside hotel in a “lovely location” overlooking Studland Bay is being extended to accommodate demand as Pig founders Robin & Judy Hutson head into retirement at the end of 2024. Folks in general report “having a super time”, notwithstanding an experience that can be significantly up-and-down, particularly regarding the “patchy service” (“nobody appeared to be in charge”) or food that’s “OK, but not great and definitely overpriced”. Even mixed reports, though, often conclude: “but it’s gorgeous, and we would still go back”.
Summary
“Wonderful location and friendly staff” are the big draws at this branch of the shabby-chic hotel group, with views over Studland Bay and a range of accommodation including shepherds’ huts and converted dovecotes. The kitchen serves up “classic Pig fare – simple, tasty food, much from the garden right outside”.
Summary
A “lovely setting” with views across Studland Bay and accommodation ranging from cute attic rooms to shepherds’ huts and converted dovecotes are the big attractions at this branch of the shabby-chic Pig hotel group. “Food can be a bit hit or miss”, although they mean well with a 25-mile limit for produce – “and braying London visitors can sometimes dominate the experience”.
For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
