In an “unassuming location adjacent to the A1”, this is a “great little restaurant” (with rooms) where the victuals – from nostalgic classics like prawn cocktails to burgers and pizzas – are never less than “steady” (and sometimes “delicious”, say fans). Top Tip – “the special themed evenings are particularly great”, and might take in tapas or surprisingly upscale Japanese and Indian tasting-menu nights.

This “fantastic” Grade II-listed seventeenth-century inn, just off the A1, has been run by Stephen & Laura Heath as a “good-value restaurant-with-rooms” for almost 25 years. “You may drive past it thinking it’s just a pub, but the food is excellent”, with a “changing menu” and regular themed dinners.

This 300-year-old Grade II-listed inn at a “handy location just off the A1” takes good food seriously enough to have its own kitchen garden, as well as offering a “good-value” bar dining option. Stephen & Laura Heath have steered its course since 1999.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
