Quite limited reports this year on Joe & Fiona Botham’s offbeat find – a tiny Andalusian-style bar, on a terraced street in the town. Fans “return here again and again, as the service is always warm, friendly and sharp, and the food is exceptional”. The focus is on wood-fire grilled and roasted dishes plus tapas and charcuteria. It does occasionally take flak, though, for “overhyped average dishes”.

“The quality of the tapas and cooking remains of the highest order” at Joe & Fiona Botham’s tiny but big-hitting Andalusian bar, tucked away on a terraced street in this Lancashire market town. There’s “always an interesting variety of tasty dishes plus splendid meat and fish from the clay oven in Baratxuri” – their Basque-style spot two doors away. “The young staff are well trained, friendly and knowledgeable” and there are “good Spanish beers and wines, too”.

“In the centre of this undistinguished Lancashire town, this two-tiered venue with its open kitchen comes close to taking your breath away”“quite what Ramsbottom ever did to deserve such a bustling, authentic tapas bar remains a mystery”. “Sparkling dishes (“often relying on specialist Spanish ingredients”) are as fresh and delicious as they come”, prices are “encouraging” and “the friendly staff make eating in this sometimes packed restaurant a pleasure”. “It’s also probably the only Andalusian bar in the UK to which you can travel by steam train!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
