Harden's survey result
Summary
“Foraged food prepared over a fire: unbeatable?” – Nick Mash’s higgledy-piggledy village inn is “an absolute treasure of a place”, with “really interesting, special cooking” on a purpose-built wood-fired grill that helps achieve outstanding results. It’s “well worth the trip” to the Chilterns, “(and the beautiful rooms mean it’s worth the stay, too)”. We’ve rated it in the hope that it can maintain the high standards set by former chef Jon Parry, who departed in mid-2022 after five years at the helm.
Summary
Nick Mash’s “all-round top spot” is a converted eighteenth-century Chilterns village inn (with six rooms), set up to showcase adventurous cooking of carefully chosen ingredients, many of them locally sourced or foraged. Guests gather at a set time for a drink, to watch chef John Parry (ex-Tom Aikens and Trinity, Clapham) and his “passionate” team prepare their meal on a huge purpose-built wood-fired grill.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
