Nick Mash’s four-year-old operation occupies a converted 18th century inn set in scenic countryside. Reporters “cannot fault it”, from the “passionate” and “friendly staff” to the “perfect” cooking, using “mainly locally sourced ingredients” (many of them from the kitchen garden), which are “cooked with great flair” over a bespoke wood-fired grill.

“Everything exceeds expectation” at Nick Mash’s “totally relaxing”, two-year-old conversion of an 18th-century inn (FKA The Three Horseshoes), “remotely located in beautiful Chilterns countryside”. “Every dish has an unusual twist, from foraged salads to meat cooked over the rustic charcoal grill in the fantastic adjoining open kitchen”. “This is exciting dining not often found outside London”.

After a rebrand and refurb’, this 18th-century inn is now a very promising pub-with-rooms, in a “wonderful” setting in foodie country. OK, it’s “so hipster it hurts” (pro-foraging, and with grub “cooked unusually over an open fire”), but they “really know their food”, with added praise for the service, too.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
