“Excellent burgers in a vibrant environment” have made this Lace Market independent the stuff of local legend. Founder Anmarie Spaziano hails from Rhode Island, where US diner culture first took root, and serves a “great variety” of burgers – including the Lemmy, which comes with Jack Daniels-infused mustard and is named after the late Motörhead leader, who visited in Annie’s early days. An offshoot in Derby closed at the end of 2023.

This 15-year-old Lace Market venue offers “a bewildering number and variety” of “very satisfying burgers to choose between”, inspired by founder Anmarie Spaziano’s childhood home in Rhode Island, where US diner culture began. She acquired a taste for the craft beer served alongside them here in the Midlands. There’s now a second branch in Derby.

With “a truly dizzying number of very satisfying burgers to choose from” (more than 30 at a recent count), this Lace Market operation has become hugely popular: “the place is always packed”. Success has led to a branch in Derby. Founder Anmarie Spaziano grew up in Rhode Island, where the American diner apparently originated.

It’s “always a fun visit to Annie’s, for its great atmosphere and great burgers from an extensive menu” – which features no fewer than 35 combinations with 10 different sauces. Flipping ‘Rhode Island-style’ burgers in Nottingham’s Lace Market since 2009, it now has a Derby spin-off, although the branch in Worcester closed in 2020.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
