Harden's survey result
Summary
Sue Hawkins of Bar Humbug fame transformed the fortunes of this “cosy” stone country pub when she relaunched it in 2016, with Matt & Katie Beamish taking over the lease four years later and adding it to their local ‘Potted Goose’ group of pubs (spanning The Crown at Church Enstone and The Kingham Plough, the first venue the duo took over). Chef Matt Date, who helped to revive the venue alongside Hawkins, continues to oversee the “delicious” British food, which fuels a “slightly more interesting menu than most of the competing pubs”, and ranges from a ‘Seafood Specials’ board to a well-priced prix-fixe lunch (two courses £19, three courses £23) and a hugely popular Sunday lunch which can be enjoyed from midday to a very leisurely 7pm.
Summary
Taken over and transformed some years back by Sue Hawkins of Bar Humbug fame, a “great little pub” where chef Matt Date turns out “competent” British food from a “varied menu”, including a seafood specials board and a “nice Sunday lunch”. Bonus points for the “always delightful service” (“you’re not rushed at all and made to feel welcome”).
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
