“Boisterous and friendly” ancient wine bar – “near Cambridge Circus and The Ivy” – which has delivered a “very French” experience since 1972. The “very tasty food” includes “a great cheese and charcuterie board”, plus "bourgeois" classics such as Boeuf Bourgignon or Toulouse sausage’n’mash with lentils on the side; and there’s an “incredible wine list, by the bottle or carafe”. It’s a “very laid-back” place where you might need to “share a table with equable patrons”, while “the members’ club downstairs is a cut above”.

“Just off Cambridge Circus”, this “little piece of France in the centre of London” dates from 1972 and hasn’t changed much in the interim. “Great-value wines and simple dishes” are the draw: the latter might be Boeuf Bourguignon or Saucisses de Toulouse or one of a fine selection of cheeses. There’s also a “private members’ restaurant downstairs”. Anyone interested in gastronomy should probably head elsewhere, but for old-school character at affordable prices it’s a big hit.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"More French than France! Boisterous wine bar attracting a diverse crowd, and ideal for pre or post theatre eating and above all, drinking! The menu hits the highlights of le bar cuisine, and the divine wines are available by the carafe. This place is so busy you’ll share tables and your conversation will overflow with that of your neighbours. Don’t forget to look ceilingwards for the magnificent collection of ties!"
