Fans say these straightforward Japanese operations “set a benchmark for quality sushi and sashimi”, backed up by a “fabulous sake selection” and “charming service”. The Mayfair branch is “something of an oasis off the bustle of Oxford Street”, and like its Knightsbridge sibling is “very reasonably priced for the area and quality of food”. Top Tip – “good omakase”.

The “absolute dogs for real Japanese dining” – this “authentic” duo in Mayfair (the original – “a welcome oasis from Oxford Street”) and Knightsbridge (in posh Beauchamp Place) offer “exemplary sushi and cooked dishes” backed up by “a wide sake list”. “As is always the case with this cuisine, it’s never cheap, but great for a treat”.

“High-quality sushi – the fish is super-fresh” and “very good tempura” are the highlights at this classic Japanese duo in Mayfair and Knightsbridge. A meal here is “certainly not cheap but it is fantastic”: “there are one or two London restaurants that do better Japanese and sushi. But not at these prices”. Top Tip – “ask for sea urchins in season”.

“Absolutely spot-on sushi” tops the bill at this “upmarket, though friendly” pair in Mayfair and Knightsbridge, where “the food is absolutely at a level you would expect in Japan”. “Perfectly fresh raw fish, light and crunchy tempura, great wine with attentive and flexible service” make the Mayfair original “a reliable choice just off the fray of Oxford Street”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
