In the former Mayfair home of The Square (RIP), it’s hard to know quite what to make of this high-end fish and seafood venture, which opened in late 2021 (and which, according to its website, is soon to open in Miami and New York). This basement site has always seemed a bit “corporate”, and it still does, although visiting jazz singers can sometimes inject a sense of brio. Meanwhile, the luxurious, sustainable seafood menu (which curiously also incorporates black truffle or lobster pizza to share, and a few random meat options) inspires a range of opinions: from “very good” to “such a disappointment”.

Summary

“We are Fish. We are Fresh Fish”. That’s the mission statement for the high-end fishmongers’ chain (of the same name) which has taken over this illustrious Mayfair basement site that once housed The Square (RIP). With retail branches in Notting Hill, Kensington and Fitzrovia (and coming soon in St John’s Wood and Regent’s Park), this is the business’s first restaurant venture (although at its other stores you can eat in, with simple fish bistro dishes on offer). Originally set to open in May 2021, it still had not arrived as we went to press in September 2021.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
