“Under the direction of a single, passionate and precise chef” (Yuya Kikuchi), this brilliantly “authentic” little (about 20 seats) izakaya in Soho produces some marvels, with dazzling sushi being the top pick on the menu. Don’t go if you’re in a hurry.

“If you know your Japanese food and you don’t want high-end dining with all the associated costs, then flock here! Flock and wait for one of the precious tables” at this little Soho izakaya presided over by chef Yuya Kikuchi (the best bet is to sit at the bar and watch him in action). Stellar sushi is the star turn here, although there are other menu options. Communication is “more or less without English” and “service is fine… if you have a clue what is going on”.

A diminutive new ‘Japanese tapas bar’ in Soho – there are a few tables but the Top Tip is to sit up at the bar and watch chef Yuya Kikuchi (previously at Kirazu) in action. “The authentic (slightly bewildering), Japanese food’s quite an adventure… and I thought I was a Japanese restaurant pro”; but it’s brilliantly “well made” (“the sushi rivaled the best I’ve ever had”!).

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Aubergine with miso; prawn dumpling; rice with cod’s roe and pickle; sushi selection; squid tempura; tuna roll; miso soup; skin fish. Interior just like in Japan. Very good. Booking essential - or turn up very early."
