In the bowels of the RA, this subterranean venue (with bar, garden and dining room) is praised by fans for providing “reliable food in a civilised space”. Typically for Peyton & Byrne though, it doesn’t impress everyone, with the odd report of some “terrible” dishes.

Tucked away in the basement of the massively expanded Royal Academy, this “quiet” and elegant venue (with bar, garden and dining room) is undoubtedly “useful if visiting an exhibition”. Fans acclaim the modern British cooking here, too, but the odd doubter continues to feel that it “needs to do better” on the food front.

“OK post-culture”, but “could do better” remains a fair assessment of this popular operation, hidden in the vaults of the Royal Academy (which is reserved at lunchtime for RA members and their guests). “It’s a useful location” (if a slightly “gloomy” one), but while fans say it’s “lovely” it disappoints too often to be a totally recommendable one.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
