Ratings dropped for the second year running at Jason Atherton’s casual Soho venture, amid gripes from reporters confused by the “pub setting with proper restaurant prices” or having to “wade through four menus”. Some say the food is still “consistently brilliant”. Others were “left wondering what all the hype is for” – “dishes lacked any wow factor” and are “certainly not worth the high price tag”.
“It feels like it’s where it’s all happening ... I LOVE IT!” – so say the many fans of Jason Atherton’s Soho operation – who believe it “has it all… buzzing atmosphere, superb cuisine – food you really want to eat! – wondrous cocktail bar upstairs, and staff who buzz professionally too”. Its ratings were undercut this year, however, by a number of reporters who felt that “the food is good, but you do pay a lot for it”. Top Tip – “excellent set lunch deal”.
“Living up to its name” – Jason Atherton’s Soho ‘Social’ provides “one of the most enjoyable dining experiences” in town, with its “rare combination” of “exceptional value” dishes (“such modern, interesting yet ‘familiar’ food, focussed on flavour and pure pleasure”) delivered by “really attentive yet un-pushy staff” in “a casual and buzzy setting”.
Jason Atherton’s Soho three-year-old “hits all the right buttons” for most reporters, with its “proper comfort eating”, “hip” service and “lively (but not over-loud) atmosphere”. “The ‘Blind Pig’ bar upstairs is super cool for an aperitif too”.
