Said to be the third delicatessen in London when it opened in 1900, this “iconic, old-style legacy caff” on Marylebone Lane is one the capital’s oldest traditional family-run delis, now run by white-coated Paul Rothe, grandson of the founder, and his son Stephen. “Quirky, cheerful, fun and with friendly, helpful staff who are fast and efficient” – head here for “very good and good-value sandwiches”, hand-made to order and eaten on-site or taken away, along with an exceptionally wide range of jams, condiments and mustards.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
