“Perfect sushi” and other “top-notch modern Japanese” food has drawn a steady crowd to this “sedate” Marylebone veteran for the last 35 years (it claims to be the ‘longest running Japanese restaurant in London’). No-one’s ever been that wild about the interior – the focus is very much on the (expensive) food: “you’ll leave happy but broke…”

There are many constants in feedback over the years on this veteran Japanese in Marylebone – its small fan club swears that it serves “unquestionably the best sushi in London”; it has “no ambience”; and it’s “very, very expensive”.

Even fans of this decades-old veteran have always conceded that the interior feels “barren”, and that “it might be cheaper to fly to Tokyo for lunch”, but still they acclaim its “fantastic sushi” and other “top, no-fusion-nonsense, Japanese dishes”. A couple of reporters sounded a warning note this year though: “it used to be our treat, but we found its quality had gone down”.

“I was staggered to find it’s had the same owner for 40 years!” – this “quiet” Marylebone “classic” is “just like being in Japan” (not such a boon on the ambience front…) and still delivers “outstanding” teppanyaki and “marvellously inventive” sushi. Breathe deeply when the bill arrives though – it’s “pricey”.
