For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
“Still dishing up exceptional value Punjabi cuisine after all these years (despite the various changes in setup and clientele)”; this “cheap and no-nonsense” Whitechapel dive is a legend for its “amazing curries” and lamb chops, and – “despite a swathe of competitors now” – for fans “it’s still the winner”. That said, the “cavernous” upstairs has “all the ambience of a school canteen rented out to a stag do operator” – “if you get a table downstairs it’s a bit calmer”. Meanwhile, its Streatham cousin inspires only a tiny amount of feedback, but it’s just as upbeat: “fantastic, fresh dishes – efficient and friendly service – and nicer than the E1 aircraft hangar”.
“The best Pakistani food in London!” This “Whitechapel scrum” is “a true no-nonsense star” – its lamb chops and other grills are “so delicious” but the “curries are very good too” and it’s all “so cheap, you almost don’t notice paying!” (especially as you can BYO). “Consistently great for over 20 years”, old timers “remember when it was just a hole in the wall – nowadays it’s a multi-level factory of sorts!” (Fewer reports on the “huge” Streatham outpost, but they say it too is “brilliant” and “a nicer place to eat”).
“A place of pilgrimage” for decades, this “noisy and frantic” Pakistani “bedlam” in Whitechapel is renowned for its “incredible food at incredible prices” (in particular its “stupendous lamb chops”); it provoked a couple of ‘off’ reports this year though – hopefully just a blip. It also has a well-rated, but much less well-known Streatham sibling. BYO.
“Still the gold standard, despite its expansion”, this “noisy” and “vibrant” Pakistani canteen in Whitechapel (with spin-offs) has a massive fan club for its “divine” lamb chops, and “great curries” too – who cares if the “Formica-tabled” ambience is “not the nicest”?; BYO.
