At the southerly entrance to the mega-mall formerly known as Battersea Power Station, this glammed up café provides more space and pizzazz than the food units that abound in the moody gloom of its gargantuan neighbour and is enlivened by foliage, large windows and stylish fixtures and fittings. Open from breakfast, there’s something for everyone on the not-especially foodie but competent, all-day modern café menu with mains such as Salmon Carpaccio or Chicken Meatballs.

Near the entrance to Battersea Power Station in an attractive, spacious new unit, this South African all-day cafe beamed down at the very end of 2023. Specials include a pork schnitzel fried in corn flakes, healthy salads and in-house twists on familiar cocktails. The Evening Standard’s Jimi Famurewa was very impressed by brunch here in his February 2024 review (“I cannot see a universe where most of us will not be charmed by the gloss, rigour and sun-warmed generosity of Tashas”). Some of our initial feedback agrees saying it’s “hit the ground running and very good in every respect”. Not everyone’s impressed, though, with the odd report of “disappointing” food and service that’s “unconcerned”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

Evening Standard

Jimi Famurewa confessed that it took a trip to Sydney in January to convince him of the attractions of the Antipodean brunch.

“And now I have fallen pretty hard for Tashas — a Battersea-based, first UK outpost for restaurateur Natasha Sideris’s South African café chain and a place that is meticulous in composition, breezy and generous in effect, and dusted with enough intangible, southern hemisphere magic to turn even the terminally brunch-averse into true believers.

“We finished with a dessert so good it was basically hilarious: a flawless, miniature tarte tatin, ethereally rich, inlaid with sticky pecans, and served with a racy, pourable measure of cognac caramel.

“Brunch may not be your bag; the mere thought of the portmanteau might enrage you. But I cannot see a universe where most of us will not be charmed by the gloss, rigour and sun-warmed generosity of Tashas.”
