Harden's says

Replacing Franklin's in East Dulwich, a popular local bistro for 26 years, this old pub is reverting to its original name under a group of regulars headed by Jamie Younger. He owns the Begging Bowl in Peckham and used to run the nearby Palmerston, so knows the area and its tastes inside out. The menu is to be notably Gallic with starters (from £9) like Bayonne Ham with celeriac remoulade; Steak Tartare with dripping toast; and Crab Vinaigrette. Mains (from £19) are dishes like Poached Sea Trout with dill beurre blanc; Sauté Veal Sweetbreads Grenobloise; and the Roast Poulet Jaune for two to share. A whole charcoal grilled fish and Galloway Beef Steaks are also available for sharing for 3-5 people. Desserts (from £8) include Fig Leaf Custard; a Chocolate and Hazelnut Choux Bun and Baba au Rhum, is available to share.

Not enough people have commented yet

Our reviews are based on an annual survey of ordinary diners which runs in Spring each year. But this establishment has not yet gathered enough feedback for our editors to write it up.

Do you think it deserves to be better known?

Write a quick review now using our restaurant diary service. That way it might catch our attention. Next survey, you can transfer your diary entry into our survey system. Everyone who contributes 5 or more reviews in our survey will qualify for a free guide.

For 35 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

What the Newspaper Critics are saying

Evening Standard

Mina Holland wondered whether the successor to long-time local favourite Franklins would carry on as a bistro or lean into its pub roots. The welcome news is that it remains a place where “good cooking and hungry locals happily collide…. The Victory does what a good neighbourhood restaurant should, with a talented kitchen to boot.”

High points of her meal included a starter of raw English tuna, shallots and capers and main dishes of cod served with tarragon-flecked chanterelles and a “genius sweetcorn puree”, and generous malfatti pasta balls with ricotta and green herbs in cavolo nero sauce.

The only disappointments were the “throwback” slices of airy white bread: “in London 2026, bread is an easy thing to get right; I can’t help but feel that failing to do so is a disservice to the restaurant’s cooking — those oily juices deserve better.”
