“The last man standing from the bygone burger wars” – this 2009-vintage chain’s 30-odd London branches have outlasted many of their erstwhile competitors by being “a good example of providing what it says on the tin”, with “solid, juicy, flavoursome burgers” backed up by “fast service and reasonable prices”. “Wonderful, tasty rosemary chips” help seal the appeal, and “the seasonal specials are well worth going for” too (“ditto the wings starter”). Top Menu Tip – “smash burgers have been a good addition to the menu”.

“Can’t go wrong with Honest Burger!” – This well-established chain’s ratings may be in the middle ground nowadays, but it induces little in the way of criticism and inspires a large and extremely loyal fan club for whom it remains “by far the best of the burger chains”. “The menu choice is fairly limited, but the really tasty burgers are cooked well and the rosemary fries are brilliant!”. “Better still, they will serve your burger rare or medium rare if you wish, which many places refuse to do!” Top Tip – “each branch has its own special”.

“Nearly but not quite the last man standing after the burger wars” – this “busy” chain offers “a limited menu” that’s generally credited with being a “reliable” way to “hit the spot” when craving a “decent” burger with “fragrant rosemary fries”. Ratings, though, do support those who say they are “not as good as they used to be” and risk becoming “nothing special” if the trend continues.

“You get what it says on the tin” at this hugely popular, “no frills” (“no starters and no puds”) brand – the most commented-on burger multiple in our annual diners’ poll – which is “still consistently good, despite having turned into a massive chain”. The “top-quality meat and a good variety of specials” (“check out the latter for something a little different”) are “cooked to your liking from a basic menu” and “the wonderfully flavoured rosemary fries are a fab accompaniment”. Having flirted with an all-vegan sub-brand in Leicester Square (‘V Honest’), it was converted back to the core concept in June 2022.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
