“Full marks for originality” to star chef Nuno Mendes’ taberna, where fans extol the “inspired” petiscos from his Portuguese homeland, and overlook the “modest” interior of his two-year-old unit in Spitalfields Market. That some dishes are “challenging” and “not for everyone” has always been part of its authentic appeal, but ratings slipped this year generally, with the occasional fear that it’s become too “hyped”.
“You can feel Nuno Medes’s passion for the food” at his “casual taberna-style” yearling in Spitalfields Market, which is “equally suited to a drop in for a pastel de nata and a coffee, as for a full meal”. The “unfussy” and “nostalgic” Portuguese dishes “use lots of obscure ingredients”, but are “brilliantly successful”, while “friendly, well-informed staff are keen to assist with selections”. Top Menu Tip – “fish in a tin is the highlight”.
A surprisingly low-key opening in a unit in Spitalfields Market from celeb chef du jour Nuno Mendes (Chiltern Firehouse, Viajante); clearly a passion-project, the focus is offbeat tapas from the chef’s Portuguese homeland, which most (if not quite all) reports say is “superb”. Top Menu Tip – “you must try the fish in a tin”.
