“Outstanding seasonal food with very helpful and friendly service” gets a thumbs-up for this modern Italian by Spitalfields Market. There’s a “great wine list – including by-the-glass from the Coravin system”, and it’s also highly recommended for a business breakfast – “much better than the Breakfast Club opposite, and no queue”.

This “new-style Italian” by Spitalfields Market features “superb pasta”, “first-class ingredients” and a menu that “changes with the seasons”. “Maybe a bit ‘suits’-dominated, but food, service and style are excellent”. Top Tip: “great for Italian brunch”.

“Very good quality pasta” heads the list at this “solid” modern Italian by Spitalfields Market, which serves “a rather limited but good quality menu” of “interesting dishes”. Unusually for an Italian, it’s also “great for an informal business breakfast” or cocktail-fuelled brunch, when a “full Italian” is on the menu.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"Canto Corvino was very hit and miss with nothing really standing out. Good ambience, with an open kitchen range and a really good “buzz”. Service was a little patchy, with the fairly rigid allocation of duties leading to some delays and double requests. There was some misunderstanding regarding when various courses should be delivered, (possibly due to not being able to hear the server properly through the mask). If this is an Italian restaurant, surely the concept of “antipasto, primo and secondo” should be second nature? Apparently not, as two of us were served our antipasti and primi together. The food never rose beyond what I would call acceptable. The two antipasti of “lamb ribs” had no bone, so perhaps a different description? The meat seemed to be the intercostal meat from between the rib-bones and was cooked to melting perfection. However the application of a crude and rather tasteless black, “aubergine and sesame sauce” totally ruined it. The two Burrata starters were excellent. Two of the pasta courses, crab ravioli and Canto Carbonara were decent but nothing really special, while the rabbit pappardelle was bland to the point of tasteless. The meat courses were also erratic, with one bordering on appalling. A tuna steak was very good indeed, with a decent sized chunk of excellent tuna, cooked as requested with some interesting accompaniments. The chicken Milanese was also good and as described. It was the pork chop that drew the “short straw”. A decent cut of meat, that had been very badly cooked. The exterior had been burned, (note – not “charred” but burned). To try and recover this error, I think the meat had been cut in various places to allow a little of the grill heat to cook the interior, without further burning the exterior. If this wasn’t bad enough, the “nduja and Padron pepper sauce”, (which was extremely hot), then permeated every inch of the chop, rendering it almost inedible. It’s a good job the person eating it likes hot chilli flavouring. I know nduja is supposed to be a hot, pork and chilli product but a little delicacy in its application would have been better. All the deserts were decent but the vegan berry terrine had some “jelly” at the base, that being vegan, didn’t use gelatine. The texture wasn’t particularly pleasant – in my humble opinion. The wine list had a good range, with the usual over the top mark-ups, that are evident in every London restaurant, (bar a couple of notable exceptions). The choice of so many very good Italian restaurants in London, means we won’t be rushing back to Canto Corvino any time soon."
