“Really inventive food that reflects the area” is a major attraction at this handsome venue on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales from hotelier Andrew Wildsmith. There’s “lots of foraging”, and “chefs come to the table to chat about it and explain their food” – which goes down well with reporters. Head chef Peter Howarth has worked in some of the country’s best kitchens including The Latymer, Gidleigh Park and the Devonshire Arms.

The debut property in the Wildsmith Hotels chain has a “delightful” location on the edge of the Yorkshire Dales and the food ably lives up to the setting: reporters this year just “loved the quirkiness, the fact the chef pops out to discuss with you, the use of foraging, tapping trees etc. etc.”. Towards the end of 2021, ex-Devonshire Arms head chef Peter Howarth took the reins here in the kitchen.

“A splendid addition to the growing Lake District circle of fine restaurants” – the first of the Wildsmith Hotels has a “gorgeous” country setting, but “being south of the main tourist areas makes it more accessible from the major population centres”. With its “beautifully decorated and luxurious bedrooms”, it’s “perfect for a foodies’ romantic break”, and the highlight is the cooking: “clever and heartfelt food, served with care and warmth by Oli Martin and his crew” (from an eleven-course tasting menu, with a vegetarian but not a vegan alternative).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
