Run by David (former ‘Grampian Chef of the Year’) & Sophie (FOH) Littlewood since 2013 – “a delightful gastropub with rooms set on the Ballater-to-Huntly road in deepest Aberdeenshire”. There’s “a level of sophistication that’s not what you’d expect to find in a spot so remote”, and is well showcased by the “short menu to suit all tastes with caviar on hand for the Balmoral overflow crowd”. “The whisky bar is as close as you’ll get to heaven on a night when the wind is blowing down from Norway”, while the wider venture is “as close to a trip to Brigadoon as you’ll find in modern day Scotland”, and there are “four recently renovated rooms to enable diners to enjoy the wine list to the full without having to navigate the rural roads”.

For 34 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
