“The ambience is just unlike anywhere else – a building that’s a quirky delight with lots of little nooks and crannies, it’s like stepping back in time... but there is nothing dated about the food” at this Grade I-listed property staffed by Kendal College apprentices, which provides an excellent experience in the ‘fine dining’ mould. It’s now reopened with the help of the council and English Heritage after Storm Desmond: “I don’t know how I lived without this place when it was closed!”

“The unique setting in Kendal’s oldest building, and the fact that it is mostly staffed by apprentice chefs, makes the standard of the fine dining experience even more impressive” at this “quirky” Grade I-listed property – “run by the local catering college as an apprentice training operation”. Closed as a result of Storm Desmond flooding in December, it is set to re-open in late 2016 with Chris O’Callaghan (most recently at Linthwaite House) as head chef. We’ve rated it assuming a maintenance of its former outstanding level of “modern British cooking, with a certain magpie tendency” (including “a real treat of a tasting menu”). “It’s the best eating in Kendal, and lest that sound like damning with faint praise, I find it worth the journey from Lancashire!”
