“The quality of the chef is well known and the major attraction” at this timbered country house hotel, helmed by MasterChef: The Professionals winner Mark Stinchcombe; yet while his “excellent” farm-to-fork cuisine generally pleases, service strikes some reporters as “average”: “a tremendous amount of attention has been paid to the design of the cooking school adjacent but seemingly less to what makes a good fine-dining restaurant”.

A country house hotel and cookery school in a “beautiful setting in attractive timbered buildings”, with an “almost conservatory-like” first-floor dining room; perhaps owing to high expectations – “the chef (Mark Stinchcombe) won MasterChef: The Professionals a few years back” – reports continue to waver, but the consensus is that it’s overall “worth a visit”.

“Former BBC MasterChef Professionals winner Mark Stinchcombe is deeply talented” according to fans of his and wife Sue’s farm-to-table joint in a medieval manor. The venue has attracted muted praise in the past, but seemed to deliver on its promise more consistently this year, with high praise for its “absolutely delicious” cuisine and “top-class” accommodation.

For 30 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

"talented cooking; slightly cafeteria ambience, when one might have expected a more period atmosphere."
