This gallery café overlooking a walled garden certainly has a “lovely setting” and this year there were also reports of some “interesting and very tasty” food, whether you opt for the afternoon tea or a snacky lunch based upon delights like Welsh rarebit. “If it’s sunny, head for the terrace and afterwards take in the art in the largish gallery”, which charts the story of British art from 1900 to the present via works by Barbara Hepworth, Damien Hirst et al.

A “lively, bright restaurant-cum-café looking out on a lovely courtyard” at this art gallery; following a recent trend, there were reports of some “average food” and service this year, but the majority deemed it “very pleasant”, and the “delightful” location makes it a “good place for a coffee and a snack”.

The café at this art gallery is “above average for a museum” and is certainly a very pleasant place to grab a coffee or refuel over lunch. That said, the sentiment in reports is that the food’s only “OK… used to be better”.

The “good homemade food” is, say fans, “well above average for an art gallery eating place” at this civilised café, but ratings overall are undercut by those who feel it’s merely “OK”. In either case, “the courtyard is a very nice place to sit in the summer”; (and visitors planning to take afternoon tea must remember to book 24 hours in advance).

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
