Featured Powys Restaurants
French restaurant in Montgomery
Broad St, Powys - SY15
You dont expect to find such sophisticated and refined food in the wilds of Wales, but prepare to be wowed at Stéphane Borie & Sarah Franciss beautiful inn. They have stopped doing à la carte and now only offer a tasting menu the latter is truly outstanding.
Mediterranean restaurant in Aberystwyth
31 Pier St - SY23
Fabulous tapas and wines await at this casual Spanish haunt, where diners sit on tall stools, or share a large round table at the rear of the deli; one sceptic of the communal seating confesses that they nonetheless always go back because of the very high standards
and the great (Iberian) wine list. (Fans can plan a trip to Cardiff too, with the opening of their new Curado Bar in late 2016.)
. Carlton Riverside
British, Modern restaurant in Llanwrtyd Wells
Irfon Cr - LD5
Its all change at Alan & Mary Ann Gilchrists much-loved mid-Wales inn, recently taken over by Mary Anns protégé Luke (kitchen) and his partner Rosie (front of house). Service is effective and the menu well executed, but theres a slight sense that the overall charm might be suffering
however, early days; maybe theyll blossom once they get the basics sorted.
. Llangoed Hall
British, Modern restaurant in Brecon
Llyswen - LD3
A beautiful Wye Valley setting and wonderful dining room help create the romantic ambience at this well-known country house hotel a special place, offering fare served in a style long gone elsewhere. Nick Brodies arty dishes took some flak for style over substance, but most reporters think his food is fabulous.
. Pen y Cae Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Pen Y Cae
Brecon Rd - SA9
2016 Review: This restaurant and gallery (with rooms), in a smartly converted former pub, is a solid all-rounder offering consistently good food and friendly service; remember to check out the owners aviaries (plus meerkats, wallabies etc.) at the back of the pub!
. St Johns Place
British, Modern restaurant in Hay On Wye
St. John’s Chapel & Meeting Rooms, Lion Street, - HR3
Only open part of the week, but worth the wait this café in an old chapel provides a small, well-considered, weekly-changing menu, with good imaginative combos.
. Gwesty Cymru
British, Traditional restaurant in Aberystwyth
19 Marine Terrace - SY23
2016 Review: Its one of the better venues in the area, but despite solid ratings this boutique-y seafront hotel inspired the odd disappointment this year, not helped by sometimes perfunctory service; still, most reports are of excellent dishes from local produce. If the weather permits, get into the garden.
. The Bear
British, Traditional restaurant in Crickhowell
High St - NP8
2014 Review: A famous traditional coaching inn which generates a lot of reports; but is it relying on its reputation? fans do praise its great range of pub food cooked to a pretty high standard, but to critics its just really unimaginative.
