Harden's survey result
Summary
This cosy brick and flint seventeenth-century pub has the seal of approval from cake deity Mary Berry no less, while reports – although on the scant side – generally proclaim it for some “really good” grub (not least the two-course set lunch); extensive gardens are an added boon.
Summary
“Reliable”, “high-quality food” makes this former pub on the edge of Henley “a safe choice”. “The set lunch menu is particularly good value”.
For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).

Luscombes at the Golden Ball Restaurant Diner Reviews
"A lunch for two from the ‘set menu’ was our plan and it was carried out. Note - Prices are now £28 for 3 courses: £23 for 2 from the ‘set’ menu. There is quality in the cooking and ingredients here and the service is polite and efficient. However, with 2 walkers drinking pints next to us and being on the path from dining area to the toilets the atmosphere lacked anything ‘special’. The food is much higher quality than pub food, generally, but the lay-out is neither pub nor restaurant. As a result, the food feels like it is outplaying the venue. The service for all its politeness and friendliness was extremely slow but I would guess the kitchen is small and it is a battle on busy days to get orders to table in a reasonable time. Good value now that prices everywhere have gone stratospheric but a rethink on the lay-out or as to what it is aiming to be might be called for …"
"Went as part of a large party who had taken over the restaurant for the evening, so comments may not be indicative of the norm when the restaurant is open to the public. I was curious to revisit Luscombes following its recent take-over by the present owners. My impressions are favourable, with little to suggest any adverse change, in terms of quality of food, service and ambience. When the opportunity arises I would like to return and assess The Golden Ball on a normal public opening."
