Breaking news

April 2023: Jason Atherton has slashed prices at his London restaurants to encourage customers to dine out more often, saying people were feeling “alienated” by price rises at a time of economic tightening.

Having put in over ten years of services, the chilled Soho outpost of Jason Atherton’s ‘Social’ brand no longer attracts a huge volume of feedback. But the food remains good, and the chef’s table on the lower ground floor is particularly recommended as a “truly personal and excellent” (if “rather noisy”) experience.

With its “sexy and atmospheric interior” and accomplished cuisine, the 10-year-old Soho branch of Jason Atherton’s ‘Social’ brand is a venue recommended both for business meals and for “secret assignations” – kick off the occasion in his speakeasy ‘The Blind Pig’, which is hidden upstairs.

Jason Atherton’s casual Soho venue maintains its “informal but enjoyable atmosphere” in large part thanks to its “warm and welcoming” approach to service. The food is well-rated too (if not quite at the heights it once was), with numerous reporters describing their best meal of the year here – you can indulge in a “wonderful chef’s counter experience” or stick with the prix fixe menu. Hidden away upstairs is Atherton’s speakeasy, The Blind Pig.

Ratings dropped for the second year running at Jason Atherton’s casual Soho venture, amid gripes from reporters confused by the “pub setting with proper restaurant prices” or having to “wade through four menus”. Some say the food is still “consistently brilliant”. Others were “left wondering what all the hype is for”“dishes lacked any wow factor” and are “certainly not worth the high price tag”.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
