3/5 stars
In a rare ‘geographical’ piece, Ms Maschler does a round up on Soho’s Poland Street, which she pronounces to be emerging as a restaurant destination. Top of the billling, a new establishment which doffs a “vibrant nod to the days when fish and chips was a staple food and also fuel for the spirit of Keep Calm and Carry On” – “brisk, clean, efficient, licensed and successfully classless”.

The critic is optimistic about this fast food joint: both the decor (“a funky homage to 1950s austerity chic”), and the service (“a team of young, friendly and attractive gals”) are a cut above the average chippy. This, however, makes the food all the more disappointing. “[O]ur fish – cod and haddock – have sweated inside a limp batter carapace that leaches grease on to the plate, a sign that the cooking oil isn't hot enough. Home-made mushy peas are laced with too much antiseptic-tasting mint and a buttered roll is dry and leathery.”
