For 25 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. This year diners have submitted over 60,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK.
“The Auld Alliance at its best!”; “Jean-Michel Gauffre provides an attractive menu of characteristic dishes of south-west France” (“hearty rather than elegant”), “with a fascinating list of wines from the region”, and a good dose of “charm”, at his bustling “Old Town stalwart”, behind Waverley Station – “one of the main reasons for my annual visit to the Edinburgh Fringe!”
A “lovely” Old Town staple offering “genuine French cooking”, “great service” and a pleasingly “informal” atmosphere; whilst “the focus is on the food”, there's also a “superb wine list” full of “rare bottles from the south of France”.
“Everything you might hope to encounter in a relaxed but classy French bistro” – this Old Town favourite has “improved over the years”, say its many fans, and offers rustic, family-style cooking alongside a “superb wine list, with wonderful Languedoc delights”.
“Becoming an institution!” – “a very French bistro” in the Old Town, whose “friendly” style makes it “a popular choice for family meals”; the focus is south west France, with a “superb wine list and good solid fare to boot”.
La Garrigue Restaurant Diner Reviews
"It's the food that's the draw and certainly not the cramped venue or the service which is less than fluent. Excellent scallops - though on a bed of mashed peas that provided colour rather than flavour - were followed by the signature dish, cassoulet. If you're used to the meat cooking in the beans for hours so the latter are infused with fat from the meat you'll be disappointed: here the duck leck is cooked crisped and set on a bed of beans so the tastes are distinct. It was fine eating, though and an opportunity to discover how different a coastal cassoulet is from the Dordogne variety."
