“A younger crowd, who think the place über-cool” hangs out “at all hours”, at this “cosmopolitan” Soho café, where “brilliant” Italian pastries (and breads) start the day, and “mouthwatering” savouries and cakes become available later on; the downside? – expect to stand.

Four gold Chinese statuettes stand discreetly above the coffee-making alcove in Soho’s new bakery-café Princi, offshoot of an esteemed Italian chain. Do they have these in Princi’s original Milanese outlets? You can’t blame Alan Yau for wanting a little feng shui-style luck on his side. Best known for his wildly successful Asian eateries, his previous attempt at an Italian restaurant was the short-lived Anda on Baker Street back in 2003 (it’s now the much-loved Galvin Bistro de Luxe).

“Armani on a plate at Princi” – the headline of this review of the new collaboration between Alan Yau and a famous Milanese baker tells you all you need to know. Let’s just say the critic is rather swept away: “it delivers delicious food at really modest prices for long hours, making it an exhilarating addition even to an area as over-supplied as Soho”.

The lady at Time Out comes to pretty much the same conclusion as the gentleman from the Evening Standard. “For breakfast, for lunch, during shopping, after work, after theatre, post-pub, post-cinema – London, you’ve just found your new favourite pit stop.”
