The Broadgate Circle tapas bar from the trailblazer of contemporary Hispanic cooking in London provides “excellent food in a modern environment” – even if aficionados of the more atmospheric original insist it “doesn’t replicate the better José across the river” in Bermondsey.

You find a “real taste of Spain” at this “small and friendly restaurant in Broadgate” from José Pizarro. Perhaps inevitably, the glossier surroundings here are a turn-off to those who know him via his revered Bermondsey original, for whom this “feels awfully like a franchise”, but even so, all reports rate the food as good or better.

Viewed in its own terms, José Pizarro’s outpost in Broadgate Circle offers fair value for the City: “despite not being a huge fan of tapas, I decided to give it a go and was not disappointed – the dishes were really good”. But, for such a prominent Hispanic chef, “the ambience is very ‘chainy’” and “it’s hard to believe it’s from the same stable as the Bermondsey restaurant, given the amazing reviews the other place gets”.

The vibrancy of the star Spanish chef’s tapas has always seemed slightly at odds with the glossy-but-corporate location of this outlet, in the midst of the City’s Broadgate Circle. Even those who don’t vibe with the place, though, acclaim its “friendly” style, and the cooking is rated from very good to exceptional.

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
