“Does exactly what it says on the – smart – tin”; this “cracking” (if “noisy”) haunt, near Notting Hill Gate tube, offers “stunning” wines, with 40 options by the glass (from an ‘Enomatic’ machine); it also does a “nice line in tapas”, but “food isn’t the main event”.

The “instantly welcoming” dining room of this recently-opened Notting Hill establishment, wins over a rather drunk critic. The “determinedly international” menu is “full of butch flavours” that are not always well-executed, but fortunately “each dish comes with a suggestion for an appropriate wine”. He indulges in “reckless experimentation in the wine menu”, making it an expensive meal, but advises that – for those able to restrain themselves to a single bottle – the lunch menu is “tremendous value”.

The USP of this Kensington wine specialist is it’s Enomatic machines that dispense 40 wines by the glass. The critic is quite taken with this “gumball machine for grown-ups”, and with the the selection of wines, which “seem to have been chosen to deliver great value as well as excitement, regardless of price.” After sampling wines in the “cosy front room”, she moves through to the dining room, “with close-packed tables of well-to-do locals.” The short menu is “appealing”, but “can seem a bit of an afterthought after the joys of the wine list”.

In an area that’s thin on wine bars, the critic is pleased to discover this “hi-tech revision of what a wine bar can be”. “Its USP”, we are told, “is its array of Enomatic wine machines [costing £8,000 each]... allowing 40 wines to be served in perfect condition by the glass”. “The wines begin at modest prices”, “the food is good value” and “[t]he rooms are thoroughly pleasant”. “The Kensington Wine Rooms re-ivents the wine bar just about ideally.”
