Fans find it “perfect before the Old Vic”, but this brilliantly-located brasserie (right by the railway station) is a terrible missed opportunity – critics say that its “unexciting” food and “slapdash” service make it “very much a restaurant of last resort”.
STOP PRESS: January 2011: The Waterloo brasserie has relaunched with a dramatic name change! (not really – it’s now the Waterloo Bar & Grill). It’s now part of the same group as Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club, with regular live music a feature.

This South Bank newcomer is, says TO’s top man, “a very predictable take on the French brasserie, with one important distinction”: “the bar and the restaurant areas are segregated”, and the place has a “self-consciously contemporary style” too. The menu is a “bit of a lacklustre read”, and the food (“Cafe Rouge … circa 1990”) rather in keeping. It’s the handy location, he concludes, which is “presumably the biggest appeal”.
