“Excellent breakfasts… you just need to be patient”“after all these years, the queue outside is there for a reason” according to fans of this Aussie-inspired chain, owned by celeb chef Bill Granger. There are five nowadays, but it’s still the OG Notting Hill branch – cited by fans as “the best brunch spot in West London!” – which receives the most attention. But whereas all feedback acknowledges the “nice buzz” they create, ratings are capped by reports of food that’s merely “meh”.

“Best brunch in London!” is an oft-repeated claim for Aussie celeb chef Bill Granger’s chain of “pleasant light and airy” spaces, which its army of fans see as “perfect breakfast venues, with great food, strong coffee, and a buzzy atmosphere”. The “varied” menu has the “Antipodean slant” you’d expect, but arguably “the food doesn’t quite live up to its style” and “it pays to be adventurous with your ordering: be bold and try something new! – the safe options are very… safe”. In August 2022, the group adds a fifth Marylebone site in what older readers will remember as ‘Maison Sagne’.

The “great breakfast” means “long queues” at Aussie celeb chef Bill Granger’s “Notting Hill hot spot”“the best brunch place in town”, say fans – and its spinoffs in Chelsea, Clerkenwell and King’s Cross. The “Asian-Pacific-Antipodean” fare served later in the day is generally considered “competent rather than exceptional”“it’s never quite as good as the menu suggests”.

“Despite the eternal, off-putting queues, brunching is always such a treat” at Aussie celeb-chef, Bill Granger’s “very buzzy” (“crowded and noisy”) hang-outs. “Old favourite options given a creative spin” feature amidst the “excellent choice of delicious options” and there’s an appealing “freshness” to the dishes. The Notting Hill original still inspires most feedback, but all outlets – King’s Cross, Clerkenwell and Chelsea – have their followings. For any occasion other than brunch they provoke less interest. Top Tip – “OMG, those ricotta pancakes are amazing!”

For 33 years we've been curating reviews of the UK's most notable restaurant. In a typical year, diners submit over 50,000 reviews to create the most authoritative restaurant guide in the UK. Each year, the guide is re-written from scratch based on this survey (although for the 2021 edition, reviews are little changed from 2020 as no survey could run for that year).
