Featured Whitby Restaurants
1. Magpie Café Fish & seafood restaurant in Whitby 14 Pier Rd - YO21
“Our regular fish ’n’ chip fix for years… despite living 150 miles away!” This “epic” Harbourside “stalwart” is often hailed for “the best fish ’n’ chips in the UK” and “nothing seems to have changed since before the fire” last year: the frying is “expertly done, with moist fish, crisp batter; and there are also more adventurous items on the menu, which can be really good (e.g. the seafood stew)”. “Basically, it’s everything you could want from a seaside chippy… and with big portions” (“portion control seems utterly missing!”). “Only drawback is that it can get crowded, but then you’re in Whitby”. Top Tip: “if you can get a window seat then the view over Whitby can be glorious” (but taking away and enjoying your tucker on the harbour wall also comes recommended).
2. Trenchers Fish & chips restaurant in Whitby New Quay Rd - YO21
“Superb posh fish ’n’ chips” (“they told me the boat which caught my meal!”) are to be found at this “classic and timeless chippy” – a Whitby institution for more than 30 years. Its first spin-off opened in summer 2018 at the newly restored Whitley Bay Spanish City dome.
3. The Star Inn The Harbour British, Modern restaurant in Whitby Langborne Road - YO21
This fish-based venture is the latest from North Yorkshire star-chef Andrew Pern (of Harome fame), in the former tourist information centre of his home town, by the harbour-side. He’s created a “marvellous”, “very buzzy” space in a “cracking location”, but as with his other recent openings, food and service receive a more mixed scorecard – to fans “well-cooked and extremely fresh fish and seafood”, but to foes “woeful and bigged up beyond belief by sycophantic food hacks”. A fair middle view? – “None of the food was bad, and some was great. However, it feels like a franchise; it does not feel like the proprietor is around, or cares”.
