Featured Stamford Restaurants
1. Lambert's British, Modern restaurant in Stamford 5 Cheyne Lane - PE9
Ex-Hambleton Hall chef Stephen Conways deli-café soups and sandwiches by day, and fine dining on Thursday and Friday nights wins praise for its really good food and value. (Its named after celebrated fat man, Daniel Lambert, who exhibited himself for profit in the 1800s.)
2. The George Hotel British, Traditional restaurant in Stamford 71 St Martins - PE9
The panelled dining room is a wonderful place, almost untouched by time: all fine linen, gleaming cutlery and shining glass, at this huge, storybook coaching inn, at the centre of a marvellous Georgian town. For traditional cuisine, including a dramatic beef trolley with classically fine wines it does have many fans, although the experience can not-so-infrequently end up seeming ludicrously expensive for indifferent food. NB Courtyard dining and a Garden Room bistro also feature on-site.
3. PizzaExpress Pizza restaurant in Stamford 1 High Street, St Martins - PE9
For the first 20 years of this guide, this famous pizza chain with its surprisingly distinctive branches was with tedious regularity the surveys most mentioned group: constantly re-inventing itself to remain everyones favourite standby, especially with kids in tow. Competition is sharper nowadays however, and since its ownership changed a couple of years ago (to Hony Capital) ratings and the volume of feedback have slipped well below their historical average. Yes, it is still much-mentioned, and still as reliable as ever to armies of loyal supporters, but harsher critics are stunned by the complacency and staleness of the brand: even the ubiquitous, good value voucher deals are starting to lose their shine.
4. The Tobie Norris British, Modern restaurant in Stamford
2015 Review: A beautifully-renovated ancient building tipped for its creative cuisine; a critical reporter, though, would say its more a place youre pleased to have stopped off at than a destination in its own right.
