British, Traditional Restaurants in Oxford
1. The Chequers
British, Traditional restaurant in Burcot
Abingdon Road - OX14
“Some pubs in the Cotswolds really go above and beyond, and this is one of them” – Steven Sanderson’s 400-year-old thatched village boozer with rooms (and garden) offers “lots of interesting small dishes as well as the usual suspects” (notably grass-fed British steak).
2. The Perch
British, Traditional restaurant in Oxford
Binsey Ln - OX2
“What a find!” – an “idyllic” thatched pub with a dining conservatory of some pedigree (there’s been a boozer here for eight centuries), almost on the banks of the Isis, amidst beautifully bucolic Port Meadow. Former patrons C.S. Lewis and Inspector Morse would find the food “delicious” these days – and, owing to its location and extensive gardens, it's particularly in demand come summer (when most patrons opt for the casual, burger-only Shed Bar).
3. The Trout Inn
British, Modern restaurant in Wolvercote
195 Godstow Rd - OX2
2018 Review: “An excellent location by the Thames” and “inviting Tardis-like interior” draws “crowds and busyness” to this mega-popular inn. The “unpretentious” pub grub can seem “ordinary”, but most reporters find it “generous and affordable” (and if it all get too much, “just close your eyes and think of Inspector Morse”, whose favourite haunt this is).
