International Restaurants in Soho
1. Balans Soho Society International restaurant in Soho 60-62 Old Compton St - W1
2016 Review: The Soho original has all the “charm”, but other branches of this late-night chain are “capable” and “well located”, and remain a “go-to choice” for breakfast served with a little “vibe and edge”, plus “the guaranty of interesting fellow diners at the shared tables”.
2. Giraffe International restaurant in Soho 11 Frith St - W1
“The free giraffe-shaped drinks stirrers are always a winner” for amusing youngsters at these supremely family-friendly diners, where “staff are happy to work around balloons and colouring”. Its world food menu offers “great choice” but divides views – a sizeable minority feel results are plain “dispiriting” nowadays, but parents in particular still say it’s “good value and fun”.
3. Test Kitchen International restaurant in Soho 54 Frith St - W1D
Chef Adam Simmonds (Le Gavroche, Le Manoir) has opened up a year-long ‘test’ (some might say ’pop-up’) kitchen in the Soho premises that until recently were Barrafina’s legendary first site; seating is still counter-style, so you can report your thoughts directly as you eat. It opened in May 2017 – too late for survey feedback: whether it’s worth the (fairly steep) prices for the honour of being chef’s guinea pig remains to be seen.
4. Flavour Bastard International restaurant in Soho 63-64 Frith Street - W1D
Yes, they really called it that! So what’s in a name – it seems that chef-patron Pratap Chahal is keen to use a fusion of flavours – gleaned from his time at Claridge’s, Chez Bruce, Cinnamon Club and Galvin Bistrot – to create an international menu with ‘no attempt at authenticity’. It opens in September 2017, taking over the former site of Arbutus in Soho.
