Featured Richmond Upon Thames Restaurants
1. M Bar & Grill Twickenham Steaks & grills restaurant in Twickenham Brewery Wharf, Brewery Lane - TW1
With their “clubby”, “dark” decor, Martin Williams’s Vegas-esque steakhouses can “feel like they’re trying too hard to be cool”. For more reporters, though, they are “an expensive but guilty pleasure” with “perfectly executed steak”. Change may be afoot, because, as of September 2018, Williams is no-longer the ‘ex-Gaucho CEO’, but has returned back to that post to turn around the chain he headed for many years. Where this will leave this project remains to be seen. Top Tip: “excellent deal with free-flowing Prosecco”.
2. The Bingham British, Modern restaurant in Richmond Upon Thames 61-63 Petersham Road - TW10
“A breathtaking panorama overlooking the Thames” helps makes the restaurant of this small boutique hotel “an exceptional choice in Richmond”. The cuisine is very “reliable” too, using “fine ingredients”, but there’s a recurring complaint: “the portions are very small” (“the dining room was full of ladies-who-lunch, and judging by their figures they don’t eat that much!”). Top Tip: “the market menu is good value”.
3. Rick Stein Fish & seafood restaurant in Richmond upon Thames Tideway Yard, 125 Mortlake High St - SW14
“I love Rick’s TV programmes, but his Barnes restaurant is a bit of a rip off.” The Stein empire “could have tried a bit harder” with their first London outpost, which even some fans say is “no better than its previous incarnation (The Depot)”. You do get “lovely views of the river” from its charming riverside location, near Barnes Bridge; and the food rating is middling, not terrible; but “food-wise, this place couldn’t be more different from the original in Padstow”.
4. Five Guys Burgers, etc restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 20 Hill Street - TW9
“Elevating the fast food experience” – this fast-growing US-based chain provides “a better class of quick burger” (with a good variety of toppings), plus “fries that are so savoury, and so-tasty milkshakes almost too thick to suck through a straw!” (“just don’t watch the calories…”). On the downside, “the ambience leaves a lot to be desired: it feels like a less glamorous McDonalds!”
5. The Ivy Café British, Modern restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 9 Hill Street - TW9
“A dilution of the Ivy name” – the cheaper, more bistro-esque ‘Café’ sub-brand is “a woeful imitation of the original” that’s “all style and has nothing else to recommend it”. Even many of those recommending breakfast – its best feature – say the results are “very predictable”, and later in the day you get “standard pub grub-type food at fine dining prices” served by “brittle” and “amateur” staff. “Avoid at all costs!”
6. 144 on the Hill British, Modern restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 144-150 Richmond Hill - TW10
A new neighbourhood venue for Richmond (part of the Richmond Hill Hotel), focusing on 'turf to table' local produce, with afternoon tea a feature. Lovely views and live music will set it apart from the competition.
