Featured Richmond Upon Thames Restaurants
1. Steven Edwards Bingham Riverhouse British, Modern restaurant in Richmond Upon Thames 61-63 Petersham Road - TW10
“A super-pretty location” helps make the dining room of this Richmond boutique hotel – rebranded this year as the Bingham Riverhouse – “unbeatable for a special meal”. To accompany the “lovely ambience”, and “great views over the Thames”, the food is an attraction in itself: “the menu reflects the seasons well and is always delivered to a high standard”.
2. M Bar & Grill Twickenham Steaks & grills restaurant in Twickenham Brewery Wharf, Brewery Lane - TW1
Martin Williams’s glossily-glam steakhouses have a touch of Vegas-glitz to their ritzy design, and particularly win nominations as impressive venues for business, boosted by the range of top-quality meat (the highest grades of USDA, Wagyu and Kobe beef) and an extensive wine selection. Since the top man returned to rescue Gaucho as CEO, however, some reporters feel “it’s lost its way since the wonderful early days”.
3. Rick Stein Fish & seafood restaurant in Richmond upon Thames Tideway Yard, 125 Mortlake High St - SW14
“The food may not live up to the hype, but it’s still good, and the overall atmosphere is great”, at the Stein empire’s two-year-old, near Barnes Bridge. Who knows? If it wasn’t named for TV-star Rick, its “decent-but-not-extraordinary fish, simply cooked” might seem more impressive, and might not seem “a little overpriced for what it is”. But, just as was the case when this site was previously the Depot (RIP) “what makes the restaurant is the fabulous Thames view”.
4. Five Guys Burgers, etc restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 20 Hill Street - TW9
“When all you want is an old-school burger”, these US-based arrivals of recent years really “hit the spot” – you can “build your own”, with “tons of accessories”; plus “seriously addictive fries”, “thick milkshakes”, and “more soda flavours than is reasonable”. “The eat-in experience is as depressing as McDonald’s”, though, in fact perhaps more so – “some branches have a strangely gloomy ambience” – but fans feel that “if you don’t mind 1980s-rock, a trip can still be surprisingly fun”.
5. The Ivy Café British, Modern restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 9 Hill Street - TW9
“Trading on The Ivy’s name, but nothing like the real thing”: outlets of Richard Caring’s sub-sub-brand are “squarely bistro in nature” and proving less successful than their brasserie namesakes in capturing diners’ affections. True, some do tout them as a “dependable if unexciting” choice, but – lacking the pizzazz which carries the experience at their grander cousins – the focus falls more on the “bland, by-numbers” food and service that’s “neither here nor there”. Top Tip – “Prefer breakfast to the expensive lunch and dinner options”.
6. Antipodea Richmond Sandwiches, cakes, etc restaurant in Richmond upon Thames 30 Hill Street - TW9
“An excellently seasoned burger” is typical of the “big portions of rather tasty” food at this popular, “friendly and pleasantly appointed”, all-day modern bistro in Richmond. There are also (less commented-on) branches in Kew, Putney and Notting Hill.
