British, Modern Restaurants in London Bridge
1. Elliot's British, Modern restaurant in London Bridge 12 Stoney St - SE1
“The kind of place you could eat at any day of the week” – this open-fronted wine bar and café stalwart looking onto Borough Market wins consistent praise for its “punchy plates”, many of them from a wood-fired oven; and “well-priced wine” (with “a good selection by the glass”)… so “invent any reason, just go”.
2. Story British, Modern restaurant in London Bridge 199 Tooley St - SE1
“Take your taste buds on a stimulating journey” when you sample the “truly memorable, eight-course or ten-course tasting menu spanning three to four hours” at Tom Sellers’ “extraordinary” venture, near Tower Bridge; where reporters are “blown away” by the “sensationally presented cuisine prepared with exceptional care and perfect flavours… it’s hard to find enough superlatives”. “Somehow the staff find a way to do fine gastronomy with the fun but without the pomp” contributing to an all-round “quite magical experience”. That’s the majority view anyhow, but ratings are again dragged into the middle ground by a determined minority of refuseniks who find it “an overhyped concept”: “ill-judged and wildly expensive”. STOP PRESS: throughout August and September 2019, Tom and team decamped from London to Cornwall to run ‘Story by the Sea’. At the time of this review, the presumption is that after their return, it’s then back to business as usual in SE1.
3. TING British, Modern restaurant in London Bridge Level 35, 31 St Thomas St - SE1
“The view’s the thing” at this 35th-floor all-day restaurant and lounge in The Shard, with 360-degree vistas over London and the Home Counties – “including from the loos!”. Some reporters also rate the “well-presented and thoughtful menu”, which they say contributes to “a fantastic experience”. Sceptics, though, reckon the “food is so-so, service patronising, the bill eye-watering: strictly for well-heeled tourists!”.
4. Globe Tavern British, Modern restaurant in London Bridge 8 Bedale Street - SE1
2018 Review: Bridget Jones’s Diary was filmed above this Borough Market boozer – an atmospheric spot in the heart of the area, with dishes sourced from the market traders.
