Marco Pierre White is to relaunch Luciano, by St James’s Palace, as Wheeler’s, reports new trade newspaper Galley Slave.

Standards at Luciano (“can be bitterly disappointing”, Harden’s 2010) have not always reflected well on the celebrity chef, and its relatively brief life span is another example of the lack of staying power sometimes demonstrated by restaurants with which he is involved.

Wheeler’s, the new branding, is a case in point. From 2001, White ran the original (age-old) Wheeler’s seafood restaurant, just north of St James’s Square, but the tenure, never especially successful, lasted only some three years.

Head chef of the new venture will be Garry Hollihead, who first came to note with Sutherlands, in Soho, back in the ’90s. He has most recently been working in Dubai.

The restoration of the new site as a seafood restaurant is quite a return to its roots – from 1935, it was the London outpost of the Parisian Maison Prunier. (It subsequently became the capital’s most expensive Japanese restaurant of the ’80s and ’90s, Suntory.)
