Famous fish restaurant finds new owners

picture of Drum & Monkey

Harrogate's seafood stalwart, the Drum & Monkey – one of the more celebrated destinations in the North of England – has been sold by its multi-millionaire backer Jan Fletcher. This pub and dining room has had the occasional up and down over the years, but has been plying its trade to general acclaim since 1971. (And there are not that many establishments…)

Last year this local institution won renewed praise from survey reporters, who said it was “back to the way it used to be” with a “brilliant selection of fish dishes” and “very good prices” – which does make you wonder why Fletcher sold the place.

The most likely answer, it seems, has nothing to do with the restaurant itself, as a monumental legal case between Ms Fletcher and Leeds city council continues to reverberate, with attempts recently made by the council to have her declared bankrupt.

The good news is that the Drum & Monkey is now under new management from the Carter family, who also own the Sportsman's Arms in Wath-in-Nidderdale, a traditional pub noted in our current guide as “well worth seeking out”.
