In what is fast becoming one of the rituals of Christmas, Richard Vines – restaurant man at financial news service Bloomberg – polls London’s top chefs to find out where they have had their best meal of the year (this year, restricted to London).

What’s most notable about the 2008 picks is how multivarious they are. Of the seven establishments with multiple nominations, only Barrafina W1 and Zuma SW7 attracted as many as three.

Most notable omission from the hall of faves? Yes, that would be Gordon Ramsay SW3 again. And the surprise nomination? Ciao Balla WC1 – the jolly old Bloomsbury trattoria, where Fergus Henderson (of St John EC1 fame) finds happiness in “lasagne, the kids running amuck in nearby Coram’s Fields, a bottle of grappa left on the table”.
