The Cat & Mutton reopens

picture of The Cat & Mutton

Hackney hipsters rejoice! The Cat & Mutton on Broadway Market has reopened under the ownership of Tom Gibson (proprietor of Ruby's, Dalston) with food by Licky Chop. The historic gastroboozer that's been described as “too trendy for its own good” just got a little bit cooler.

Gibson says he wanted to restore the Cat & Mutton pub to its former glory with the addition of Pearl’s cocktail lounge on the first floor and a new menu from Ben Denner, the man behind mega popular pop-up Licky Chop in Hackney's Climpsons Arch.

The ground floor of the pub, with its vintage enamel mirrors, impressive oak bar and banquet seating, serves draft ales, beers and a selection of spirits. While the first floor is now Pearl’s – little sister of Ruby’s – an intimate cocktail bar.

The menu offers oysters (fresh or smoked); burnt broccoli, yoghurt, pickled mustard seeds; pulled pork roll, American cheese, coleslaw; bucket of mutton chops, bean salad, mash, mint sauce; smoked haddock, charred leeks, aioli, toast and rhubarb sorbet with prosecco.

Named after the Cat and Mutton bridge over nearby Regent’s Canal, the boozer is steeped in the history of Broadway Market. It stood almost alone on London Fields offering respite to farmers as they drove their herds of sheep from the farmland of Hackney and beyond to Smithfield Market for slaughter, thirsty old work. Coal deliverers would have also frequented the public house for a tipple as they travelled up the Regent’s Canal on coal barges called ‘cats’.
