Brief encore for La Giaconda

picture of Giaconda

The last note has sounded for Tin Pan Alley’s Giaconda, as the relaunched restaurant shuts shop less than two months after re-opening. Apparently a Flat Iron steakhouse will take its place.

Back in January, we reported (here) on the relaunch of the former Giaconda Dining Rooms as La Giaconda café. Australian chef Paul Merrony won many fans when he first launched the establishment as a cramped bistro offering tasty food at good prices, but attempts to take the establishment upmarket have never really seemed convincing.

I am a bit sad but not wholly surprised. Went just before Christmas and it was not anywhere near as good as previously. Food not as good and more expensive, lacking the good value it once was. Also missing the offal and similar food which was a strong attraction.
