We used to talk about ‘megabrasseries’ back in the late-90s. As the term was largely used to describe the large restaurants the Conran group was at that point foisting on the unsuspecting public – such as the late and unlamented Mezzo – it quickly fell into disuse.

The megabrasserie, however, is back. The Bouchon Breton – whose opening date is now confirmed as 3 October – is an all-day operation which will have no fewer than 200 seats (more than either the Wolseley W1 or Le Café Anglais W2). And, while we’re talking big numbers, the wine list will run to more than 700 bins.

It sounds a pretty serious venture too, with Nicolas Laridan, formerly head chef of Le Gavroche W1, heading up the kitchen.

Could be, just could be, the great French brasserie which London has still never really had.
